An executive management team, comprising divisional chief executive officers, HR and our CFO, is supported by operational managing directors, executive directors and senior management. Operational management teams carry out the day-to-day management of the group and carries out the tasks delegated to it by the board. The divisional chief executive officers are members of the executive committee.

Chief executive officer

Gary qualified as a chartered accountant in 1995, after completing his articles with Deloitte. In 1996, he joined a private company in the timber industry, which was later acquired by Steinhoff Africa Holdings Proprietary Limited, where he fulfilled numerous roles in the South African timber and furniture manufacturing operations. He then joined PG Bison Proprietary Limited (‘PG Bison’), where he was appointed to the board in August 2006, and as chief executive officer in November 2011. When KAP Limited acquired PG Bison in April 2012, Gary was appointed to the KAP executive committee. He later assumed full responsibility for KAP’s diversified industrial segment and was appointed as the chief executive officer of KAP in November 2014.

Frans qualified as a chartered accountant in 2004, after completing his articles at KPMG in Johannesburg. In 2005, Frans joined Riso Africa Proprietary Limited as the financial manager, followed by Steinhoff Africa Holdings Proprietary Limited as a financial manager in 2006. Frans joined PG Bison Proprietary Limited in 2009, as the group financial manager. He was appointed as chief financial officer in 2010. Frans was promoted to the position of chief financial officer of the diversified industrial segment of KAP Limited in 2015 and, in April 2016, he was appointed as the chief financial officer of KAP.

Penwell joined Steinhoff Africa Holdings Proprietary Limited in September 2005, as group industrial relations manager, responsible for the management of labour relations and labour law matters. He joined KAP Limited in April 2012. In June 2016, he was appointed as the group stakeholder relations executive and member of the executive committee, focusing on industrial relations and community interactions in the areas in which the group operates. Penwell was appointed as an executive director responsible for corporate affairs of KAP on 18 November 2021. Penwell represents KAP in various industry, trade and government-related matters in addition to his human capital and industrial relations responsibilities.

H (Neels) Kornelius (50)

Enterprise risk executive

Neels has held positions in insurance and risk management across the financial services and mining sectors with Aon, Willis Towers Watson and Anglo American. In 2017, he became one of the first six South Africans to be awarded the Certified Risk Management Professional designation by the Institute of Risk Management South Africa. He was appointed to his current role with KAP in January 2022.

C (Corné) van der Schyff (47)

Corné completed her articles at Mazars Pretoria in 2001. From 2002 to 2011, she fulfilled numerous roles in the automotive industry, including procurement, manufacturing operations and commercial to general management with Associated Motor Holdings, Automotive Leather Company, Autoneum (Switzerland) and Feltex. Corné joined the KAP corporate team in 2012, as the chief financial officer of the manufacturing division. In 2015, she was appointed as the manager of mergers and acquisitions. In February 2017, she joined the corporate finance team of Steinhoff International and head of group finance in 2019. Corné joined KAP as finance executive in December 2022.

IT executive

Mike started his career at ArcelorMittal South Africa, where he managed the implementation of factory planning and scheduling systems. In 2000, Mike joined i2 Technologies as a solution architect and worked on the implementation of supply chain systems across various industries in Europe and the United States. Mike joined PG Bison in 2004, and was appointed as IT executive of KAP in 2018.

Investor relations executive

Christina’s earlier work experience includes management consulting and scientific research. She has 13 years’ experience in investment banking, with a primary focus on the resources, diversified industrials and small-cap sectors. She has significant experience in financial markets, corporate finance, investments and investor engagements. Christina joined KAP from Absa Corporate and Investment Banking, where she was a director and head of diversified industrials. She was appointed as investor relations executive in October 2021.

After completing her articles at Deloitte Pretoria in 1994, Cicelia lectured at the University of Pretoria until 1996, when she accepted a secondment to Deloitte London to specialise in transfer pricing. She was part of the international tax team at Deloitte Woodmead, until she joined the Barloworld tax team as group senior tax advisor from 2001 to 2007. After a brief stint the North-West University’s Potchefstroom campus, Cicelia rejoined Barloworld in 2011, as group senior tax advisor, and was promoted to head of tax in 2013. She also served on the SAICA National Tax Committee from 2007 to 2015. Cicelia joined KAP as tax executive on 1 November 2022.

Reino joined the South African Reserve Bank as an in-house legal consultant in 1998. In 2003, he moved to Nedbank Limited as an in-house legal advisor. In 2004, he joined Citibank South Africa as in-house legal counsel, becoming the South African country counsel and a member of the management committee. Reino joined Steinhoff as manager: treasury and legal services in November 2015, and in March 2018, he joined KAP as treasury and legal executive.
