Safripol wins 2020 CAIA Responsible Care Initiative Award – Corporate Social Responsibility category
The award was presented by CAIA (Chemical and Allied Industries Association) to Safripol who, in partnership with PETCO, established the Bophelo recycling project in Ermelo.
The award was in recognition of the significant and positive impact the Bophelo recycling project has made on improving the lives and livelihoods of community members in Ermelo.
Safripol and PETCO sponsored the Bophelo Recycling company and it has developed into a waste buy-back centre for all types of recyclables which are collected from informal settlements, households and schools in the Ermelo area. Since its inception, the centre has doubled its recycling output to 9.5 tonnes and now employs eleven permanent staff members and twenty part-time waste collectors.
CEO of Safripol, Nico van Niekerk, says they are very honoured to have received the award but acknowledges the success of the Bophelo recycling project is due to the passion and dedication of its owner, Johanna Leshabane. “Her desire to make a positive contribution to her community and perseverance has made the project a success” says Nico.
“At Safripol we are committed to our sustainable development goals” says Nico. “We wish to advance the circular economy and socio-economic development of our people and our communities. We look forward to further partnerships to achieve real change in people’s lives”
